TIME TO POWER UP!

As you will know our Executive Manager Yaw Owusu has been consulting with the PRS Foundation, the UK’s leading charitable funder of new music and talent development, to develop a new initiative aimed at addressing anti-Black racism and disparities in the music sector. On Monday, the initiative entitled Power Up launched to much industry wide fanfare.

‘Power Up’ is a long-term initiative designed and steered with over 80 Black music professionals, aimed at supporting 40 Black music creators and industry professionals per year with grants and industry-wide support as well as addressing anti-Black racism and disparities in the music sector.

Set up and managed by PRS Foundation in partnership with YouTube Music, Beggars Group and the Black Music Coalition, the initiative brings together several music industry partners across all sectors to accelerate change. Supporters include AIM, the BPI, the FAC, The Ivors Academy, the MMF, the MPA, MPG, The Musicians’ Union, PPL, PRS for Music and the PRS Members’ Fund who bring added-value support to power up participants.

To lead the decision-making process, a Power Up Executive Steering Committee was established in late 2020 featuring:

  • Keith Harris OBE, MD Keith Harris Music Ltd. (Artist Manager, Consultant)
  • Paulette Long OBE, Westbury Music (Music Publisher, Consultant, Dep’ Chair, UK Music Diversity Task Force)
  • Ammo Talwar MBE, Punch Records & UK Music Diversity Task Force Chair
  • Sheryl Nwosu, Lawyer & Chair of the Black Music Coalition
  • Mulika Sannie, Senior Vice President, Business Affairs, Kobalt
  • Jackie Davidson, JD Management
  • Ben Wynter, Co-Founder of Power Up, Founder Unstoppable Music & AIM Entrepreneur and Outreach Manager
  • Char Grant, A&R Director 0207 Def Jam, Founder of The Debrief & Black Music Coalition Executive Committee Member

  • Joe Frankland, CEO, PRS Foundation

Executive Steering Committee member, Char Grant said, “I am very proud to be a part of the executive steering committee which is shaping the Power Up programme. I am beyond happy that our shared vision for the betterment of Black people is starting to be delivered on terms that create real opportunity for the next generation of Black artists, Black creatives, and those that wish to build careers in the industry.”

‘Power Up’ aims to break down barriers to create a fairer, more equitable music industry, to achieve better representation in all sectors of the UK music industry, and to amplify the work of Black creators and industry professionals, through two strands, the Power Up Participant Programme and the Power Up Movement.

The Power Up Participant Programme is a long-term network addressing barriers facing 40 Black participants (20 Black music creators and 20 Black executives and industry professionals) each year. Participants will be at crucial career stages, working in any genre or sub-sector, and will be in need of support to progress, powering up through:

  • Grant support of up to £15,000
  • Capacity building and mentoring
  • Support from partners
  • Marketing support

In alliance with the Black Music Coalition, the Power Up Movement will set targets and apply industry pressure to increase Black representation, empower and advocate for Black talent and industry professionals, consequently influencing policy and shaping the future of the music.

Power Up Ambassadors include MC and actor Kano; award-winning BBC Presenter and Music Entrepreneur DJ Target;Disturbing London Founder Dumi Oburota;artist Ray Blk;LinkUp TV Founder Rashid Kasirye; and singer-songwriter Sabrina Washington

Power Up Ambassador Ray Blk said, “I’m delighted and so proud to be an Ambassador for Power Up and lend my support and voice for the initiative to help make the change the industry so desperately needs.”

Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music at YouTube added: “We’re currently facing the perpetual moment of truth. We’ve seen our Black brothers and sisters demeaned and disrespected for centuries and as a music industry, we have an outsized voice in culture and must be held accountable. We have a lot of work to do, but YouTube Music is committed to this marathon. We’re proud to be partnering with the PRS foundation to accelerate real change.”

THE PLAYMAKER GROUP 2020 ROUND UP

Without stating the obvious, 2020 has been an incredibly testing year for everyone around the world.

One of the industries hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic has been the creative sector. From new ways of broadcasting, to the cancellation of the live music market, 2020 has presented a number of challenges for companies like ours.

Firstly we would like to salute our colleagues and friends from across the various areas of work that we inhabit across the world – stay strong, and always look forward.

Secondly (as we always do at this time of year), we would like to reflect on a few of The Playmaker Group’s 2020 work output with our annual Top Five.

In no particular order, here is a few bits that summed up 2020, The PMG style…

SEANI B & BUJU BANTON – FEB 2020

“DESTINY – THE BUJU BANTON STORY” – The Grammy winning artist had been incarcerated in America for ten years, and after a much heralded return to his home he kept a low profile for over a year. In his first major international interview, The Playmaker Group produced a two hour interview and exclusive band session with Buju Banton which looked at his past, his present and his future. Excellently presented by Seani B, this programme was critically received for its level of honesty and journalistic approach coupled with an inclusive outlook which brought the subject to a new and wider audience. As a production and presentation team which knew and understood Buju and the impact of his work over the previous three decades, this was a show that we wanted to ensure we handled correctly for BBC Radio.

We hope you enjoy the end results!

NO BASS LIKE HOME – NOV 2020

“BRENT 2020 BOROUGH OF CULTURE” – In late 2019, we were awarded the Event Production rights for Brent’s “No Bass Like Home” concert – a two day celebration of the work and impact of reggae in the borough as part of its Borough of Culture status for 2020. Our original role was providing event infrastructure and management for the two days in north west London, which included all elements of H&S, design, liaison with outside agencies as well as the physical running of the event on showdays.

Covid put paid to this iteration of “No Bass Like Home”, but it couldn’t stop it all!

The PMG were then tasked with creating an online festival with a difference – seven hours, three venues and with an editorial outlook that still celebrated the original show. Working with show curator Seani B, we set about getting the idea solidified and working within the new Covid guidelines. This presented many new challenges for the team at large, and we are proud to say that these were met head on by everyone involved. With a stellar line up that included Janet Kay, General Levy, Marla Brown, Christopher Ellis, The Cimerons and Sweetie Irie as well as Julian Marley from Miami and the legends Ken Boothe, Horace Andy and Tony Matterhorn from Kingston, this event definitely lived up to it’s billing. A glowing example of a clear creative viewpoint, amazing teamwork and a desire to overcome obstacles thrown in front of us – watch and enjoy!

NO BASS LIKE HOME

“KISS FM CARNIVAL TAKEOVER” – Having grown up on a staple of Kiss FM as youngsters, being given the opportunity to work alongside this content powerhouse was definitely a highlight of the year. Anyone who knows Kiss and their range of brands will be aware of the breadth and range of their output – from KISStory which celebrates heritage and history of black and dance music, to KISS Fresh which serves as a flagwaver for the next generation of music styles, DJ’s and genres.

The PMG were tasked with creating a unique approach to Carnival during the pandemic – three stations (KISS FM, KISStory & KISS Fresh), all with their unique audiences and outputs which can intertwine whilst maintaining their uniqueness and individuality.

One of the key elements for us as a team is to have the belief and backing of those you are working with, and the KISS team were amazing from day one. Their willingness and openness to ideas and suggestions away from their day to day norm set them apart and guided us to create a one off line up which mirrored a festival from hour to hour. With something for everyone, and very mindful of respecting the traditions and meanings of Carnival, our programming and production were showcased fully here.

CARNIVAL ON KISS – AUG 2020

“THE STORY OF MARCUS GARVEY ON BBC RADIO 4” – One of our ambitions for 2020 was to widen the scope and range of content we create. Working with a network suck as BBC Radio 4 was high on the agenda, following the shows we had made for BBC World Service in 2019.

“THE BLACK STAR LINE – FROM MARCUS GARVEY TO JAY Z”  was the story of the ideology of one of the most important people in black history. Marcus Garvey believed in self-reliance, self-confidence and a black nation. He was spectacularly brought down, but his ideology still lives on. Presented by Maurice Delauney. This was broadcast on BBC Radio 4, on 6th October and was subsequently selected for BBC Radio 4’s “Pick Of The Week” programme.

MARCUS GARVEY – BBC RADIO 4 – OCT 2020

“ACE & SEANI B – BLACK LIVES MATTER” – Talent management and development is an area of The PMG’s portfolio that we take a great deal of pride in. Two of our clients showed just what they bring to the table at an unprecedented time for broadcasting.

Summer 2020 was like no other. Not only did the Covid pandemic completely rip up any existing notion of “normal”, but tensions and emotions were at an all-time high in the black community with the unjust killing of George Floyd, which lead many black communities across the world to re-evalute their values, position in society and their need and want to be “heard”.

The young black community in the UK felt no different. As a network, BBC Radio 1Xtra took the mantle upon themselves to produce a special one off programme –  “1Xtra Talks” – which looked at the feeling of the black community in the UK. This could not just be an emotive programme, it needed to be something which had more than just journalism. It required honesty, passion, a level-headed overview as well as a clear and concise knowledge and ability to broadcast.

One of the reasons this show is on our list is that two of our talents that we manage – Seani B and Ace demonstrated all of those attributes with style. From the opening lines of the pair of them explaining that today they were “Maurice and Ashley, not Seani and Ace – two black men who are hurt, annoyed, frustrated and upset“, to the level of sensitivity they both demonstrated across what could have been just a rant, Seani and Ace made us all at The PMG very proud by displaying what we know they are capable of. Of course it is a shame that it took these tragic events for them to have created this style of jaw dropping radio, but when the call was made they both proved what incredible broadcasters they are. It went on to become one of the highlights for The Guardian newspaper for 2020, and is definitely one of ours.

ACE & SEANI B – SUMMER 2020

ACE & SEANI B HOST “THE MOST MEMORABLE HOUR ON RADIO THIS YEAR”

Acclaimed English journalist and broadcaster Miranda Sawyer picked her Top 10 radio and podcasts from 2020 for the Guardian. At No.3, was the 1Xtra Talks special, hosted by the PMG’s Ace and Seani B.

Miranda said, “Ace and Seani B host the single most memorable hour of radio this year. After George Floyd’s death, several black DJs spoke out about how they were affected, notably Clara Amfo on Radio 1. Ace and Seani took the discussion to a deeper level, explaining how they altered their behaviour (or not) according to how they are perceived within white society, and letting listeners call in to contribute”.

Even though we agree with Miranda it is still excellent to see such worth recognition on such a platform. Big up Ace and Seani for their continued commitment to honest and real journalism!

PMG CONTINUES WORK WITH PRS FOUNDATION

The PMG’s Yaw Owusu continues his consultancy work with the PRS Foundation, moving over to a Senior Management role overseeing and leading on PRS Foundation’s new initiative that will be launched in January 2021 and will power up Black music creators and industry executives.

Yaw said, “I am excited to continue to build upon the great foundation we have started over the last few months. This soon to be announced initiative and the scope of this new role will enable me to be effective and efficient in contributing to positive changes for Black music creators and industry executives in so many ways”.

Joe Frankland, CEO of PRS Foundation said, “We’re delighted to have Yaw continue his work with the PRS Foundation team. He has played an instrumental role in shaping our new programme, forming a new Executive Steering Group and 7 Focus Groups along the way. Bringing him in long-term and in a newly created senior position was a no-brainer and allows us to start 2021 as we mean to go on – with a game-changing new initiative for long-term positive change.”

Yaw Owusu is a Director and Executive Manager of The Playmaker Group where his prime activities include creative consultancy, talent development and content creation.

PMG DELIVERS 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

Radio over the Christmas period can get a little monotonous to say the least. Well, our latest run of production definitely plan to shake things up a bit!

The PMG have produced 12 special shows for the festive period, exclusively for BBC Radio 1Xtra. The set, entitled 12 Days of Christmas, are 60 mins in length and focus on one elite artist every day selecting some of their favourite tracks from quite surprising categories e.g what’s your guilty pleasure. The artists include John Legend, Mr Eazi, Seani Paul, Koffee, H.E.R, Shakka and many many more!

12 Days of Christmas kicked off on December 14th at 18.00 and runs everyday at the same time until Christmas Day. On Christmas Day the set will take over the airwaves for a full 12 hours as the shows run back to back.

If that wasn’t enough, the PMG have also produced an uber-creative – some may describe as “wacky” – Christmas special for the Heartless Crew. The show, which premiered on Sun 20th Dec but will repeat on Christmas Eve, finds the Heartless Crew making a mad dash back to London in order to their radio show after a set in the North Pole. As they travel back they bump into some friends along the way, including Toddla T, Stevo The Madman and Nay Nay, as well as various interactions with others including Snoochie Shy, Funk Butcher and their producer, Finn! Not one to be missed!

So there you are, 14 hours of PMG produced radio to soak in this Christmas!

THE PMG CELEBRATE LONDON’S BOROUGH OF CULTURE IN FINE STYLE

One of London’s most celebrated districts, Brent, was awarded the honour of London’s Borough Of Culture for 2020

The Covid-19 pandemic changed the entire outlook of the celebrations – from a series of events which focused on arts, culture and music, to a series of online panels and discussions.

Step forth NO BASS LIKE HOME. An ambitious seven hour online stream celebrating the relationship between the area of NW10 and reggae from the 50’s to the present day.

The PMG were responsible for three elements of the stream, namely Event Production, Directing the recording and Producing the stream.

With a line up curated by our own Seani B and that boasted the cream of North West London talent including General Levy, Big Zeeks, Sweetie Irie, Christopher Ellis, SilverStar Sound, Marla Brown and The Cimarons. As well as the acts performing in London there was also showcases from Julian Marley in Miami and Horace Andy, Ken Boothe and Tony Matterhorn in Kingston, Jamaica.

An incredible event which showed the power of local authority support as well as a will to showcase a culture that has added so much to the local area and beyond.

You can watch it back – all 7 hours! – on Facebook. Check it out now:
